Villains, Basketball, Bishop McGuinness High School
“Thompson could see their level of conditioning wasn’t going to carry them all the way to a state title. So he enlisted CrossFit Winston Salem… to come to the school three days a week for two months over the summer. In an intense cocktail of medicene balls, circuit training, weight lifting and sprints the Villiains gained a new appreciation of the words ‘in shape.’ And ‘nap time.’”
Greensboro News & Record, March 6, 2009
Update: The Villains won the state title.
Next season | Coach Thompson: “We won our season opener last night by 4 points. Down 7 at the half, 10 at one point in the third, but out scored them 16-6 in the fourth quarter to win. It was, no doubt, in large part due to the fact that we were the better conditioned team down the stretch. Plus, because of injuries we had to play with only 8 players. We still had more in our tank at the end than the other team did. I told the guys the conditioning paid off in the first game of the season and that we won because we were in better shape.”
